Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, in the North West of England. It is located on England’s west coast by the Irish Sea.
The town has been a popular holiday and short break destination since the 18th century when it became fashionable to travel to the coast during the summer months. People came from all over the country to bathe in the sea water and relax on the town’s sandy beaches. Blackpool is still visited by millions of tourists each year.
Blackpool has many major attractions that are not only famous in this country but also further afield. In addition to its sandy beaches and promenade, landmarks include Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Illuminations and the Pleasure Beach resort.
Blackpool Tower
The Blackpool Tower, inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, dominates the town’s skyline. The tower stands at 158 metres tall and was opened to the public for the first time in 1894. Customers can ride to the top of the tower via a lift where they can overcome the “Walk of Faith”, a glass floor panel and experience the Tower Eye, Blackpool’s first 4D cinema. At the base of the tower is the building that houses the Tower Circus and the iconic Tower Ballroom, where dancing is on every day.
Blackpool Illuminations
The magical Illuminations light up the Blackpool Autumn sky for over 65 nights a year from August til November. The Illuminations have been a major part of the town’s attraction since 1879 and attract millions of visitors each year.
Pleasure Beach Resort
The Pleasure Beach in Blackpool is the name of its theme park situated along the Fylde coast. There are over 125 rides and attractions plus spectacular shows. The theme park has something for everyone. Kids can enjoy Nickelodeon Land which is home to a whole host of famous kids tv characters such as SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer. It’s not all for kids though; thrill seekers can brave one of Europe’s tallest rollercoasters, the Pepsi Max Big One or the exhilarating Infusion, a five looping rollercoaster suspended over water.
As Blackpool is such a popular resort in the UK, it is full of suitable accommodation ranging from small family run B&B’s to luxury hotels in Blackpool. There should be something for everyone whatever your budget is.
